The Challenge: Complex Hospital Logistics and Critical Compliance

As the home of Leicestershire’s only accident and emergency service, Leicester Royal Infirmary is a busy city centre hospital operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The NHS Trust needed to expand its infrastructure by combining existing assets with new, high-specification space.

The project introduced several critical constraints:

  • Live Hospital Environment: Construction and installation had to take place with zero disruption to patients, medical staff, and members of the public.

  • Complex Structural Merging: The brief required relocating and refurbishing an existing 6-bay facility and seamlessly linking it with both a pharmacy and brand-new modular units.

  • Stringent Healthcare Regulations: The build demanded absolute compliance with strict clinical standards, tight timescales, and rigorous health and safety protocols.

The Solution: A Bespoke Hybrid Configuration

GCS collaborated closely with the hospital project manager and their architect from the outset. Our expertise in modular healthcare buildings allowed us to design a hybrid solution that maximised the client's budget by blending refurbished units with new manufacturing.

Our approach included:

  • Phased Relocation and Refurbishment: Safely moving an existing 6-bay structure across the busy site, refurbishing it to a premium standard, and preparing it for integration.

  • Advanced Structural Engineering: Creating a seamless link between the relocated bays, the existing Trust Med Pharmacy, a new 4-bay extension, and a specialised single robot bay.

  • Meticulous Site Management: Working under stringent healthcare safety conditions to coordinate deliveries and structural connections without compromising hospital operations.

  • Architectural Collaboration: Ensuring the final layout fully optimised the technical and clinical specifications required for patient care.

The Results: Enhanced Efficiency and Expanded Capacity

The completed 11-bay complex provides the hospital with an exceptional return on investment, delivering a substantial amount of clinical space from a highly complex layout.

Key Benefits Delivered:

  • Optimised Patient Experience: The new facility offers a bright, airy, and welcoming reception and waiting area for visitors.

  • Clinical Modernisation: The inclusion of a dedicated robot bay allows the hospital to deploy automated pharmacy technology efficiently.

  • Cost-Effective Expansion: Combining refurbished modules with new structural bays minimised material waste and maximised the client's available budget.

Client Testimonial

"GCS Group were responsible for the supply of two new modular buildings to facilitate a waiting area and a space for a new robot. We looked at several alternative suppliers, but chose GCS on cost and quality. They were the only Company we found that offered a bespoke solution in the time frame that we had to work with. They were a pleasure to work with and went the extra mile to deliver the project, which was challenging considering the works were at the centre of the Hospital."
