GCS Group’s Modular Building for Leicester Royal Infirmary’s Award-Winning Pharmacy

TrustMed, Leicester Royal Infirmary’s on-site pharmacy, has recently been named Hospital Pharmacy of the Year at the Pharmacy Business Awards 2025. GCS Group is proud to have supplied the modular buildings that house the award-winning pharmaceutical service.

TrustMed’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence was recognised at the national awards. It also marks another successful project delivered by GCS Group’s modular construction team.

Delivering a purpose-built pharmacy facility

When Leicester Royal Infirmary required additional facilities to support its expanding pharmacy operations, GCS Group was approached to provide a modular solution that could be delivered efficiently within a live hospital environment. The scope included two bespoke modular buildings: one to accommodate a new pharmacy robot, and another to create a dedicated waiting area for staff and visitors.

Both structures were designed to meet the specific requirements of a modern hospital setting, with careful attention paid to quality, compliance and seamless integration with existing infrastructure. The facilities were delivered within tight time constraints and tailored precisely to the hospital’s operational needs.

Jeff Howarth, Project Manager at University Hospitals Leicester, commented, “GCS Group were responsible for the supply of two new modular healthcare buildings to facilitate a waiting area and a space for a new robot. We looked at several alternative suppliers but chose GCS on cost and quality.”

The testimonial reflects not only the quality of the finished buildings but also GCS Group’s ability to collaborate effectively and work around the complexities of an active hospital site.

Fast, efficient and compliant construction

One of the key reasons GCS Group was selected for this project was our ability to deliver a bespoke modular solution within strict deadlines. By manufacturing modules off-site in a controlled environment, GCS was able to maintain high standards of quality while keeping disruption to hospital operations to an absolute minimum.

The modular buildings were engineered to meet healthcare specifications, including robust mechanical and electrical installations, ventilation systems, and hygienic finishes. Once the modules were transported to the site, installation and commissioning were completed efficiently, allowing the TrustMed team to begin using their new facilities without delay.

This rapid delivery was particularly valuable given the central hospital location, where traditional construction methods would have caused significant disruption to patients and staff. GCS Group’s modular approach ensured the project was completed safely, smoothly and on schedule.

Designed for performance and adaptability

Both buildings were developed with functionality and long-term flexibility in mind. The space housing the new robotic dispensing system was tailored to accommodate specialist equipment, creating a controlled environment that supports accuracy and automation. The waiting area provides a comfortable, accessible space designed to enhance the patient and staff experience within the pharmacy setting.

By working closely with the Trust’s estates and project management teams, GCS Group ensured that every aspect of the design met operational needs and regulatory standards. We delivered a facility that combines clinical efficiency with a welcoming, practical layout that can be adapted in the future if requirements change.

Supporting an award-winning operation

TrustMed’s success in winning Hospital Pharmacy of the Year at the Pharmacy Business Awards demonstrates the value of creating the right environment for clinical excellence. While the award rightly recognises the achievements of the TrustMed team, the modular facilities supplied by GCS Group provided the infrastructure that enabled the pharmacy to continue delivering safe, efficient and innovative services.

A well-designed pharmacy building supports key aspects of modern hospital operations, from workflow and storage to technology integration and staff well-being. The Leicester Royal Infirmary project is an example of how GCS Group’s modular expertise contributes to these outcomes, allowing healthcare providers to achieve more within their available space and budget.

A trusted approach to healthcare construction

Healthcare projects demand precision, reliability and compliance. GCS Group has extensive experience delivering modular buildings for hospitals, clinics and healthcare trusts across the UK, combining speed of delivery with the high standards expected in medical environments.

The Leicester Royal Infirmary project demonstrates several advantages of modular construction in healthcare:

  • Minimal disruption – Off-site manufacture kept site activity to a minimum, reducing noise and impact on hospital operations.

  • Reduced delivery time – The ability to build modules while site preparations were underway shortened the overall schedule.

  • High quality and compliance – Factory-controlled conditions ensured accuracy, consistency and full regulatory compliance.

  • Sustainability – The modular approach generated less waste and required fewer site deliveries.

  • Flexibility – The buildings can be adapted or expanded in future as hospital needs evolve.

These benefits make modular construction a practical and forward-thinking choice for healthcare providers looking to expand or modernise their facilities efficiently.

Recognition through collaboration

The partnership between GCS Group and University Hospitals Leicester reflects the importance of collaboration in achieving successful project outcomes. From planning through to delivery, GCS worked closely with hospital teams to ensure that every stage of the build aligned with their operational and logistical requirements.

“We’re delighted to have supported Leicester Royal Infirmary and TrustMed with modular buildings that met their needs both in quality and timescale. Seeing the team go on to receive national recognition is a fantastic result, and we’re proud to have contributed to the infrastructure that supports their continued success.” Gary Sheppard, Managing Director, GCS Group

The Future of Healthcare Modular Buildings

The Leicester Royal Infirmary project is an excellent example of how modular construction can support healthcare innovation. With growing pressure on healthcare estates to expand capacity quickly and efficiently, modular healthcare buildings are proving to be an essential part of the solution. They offer a combination of speed, adaptability and long-term value that aligns with the needs of modern healthcare delivery.

By delivering high-quality, compliant facilities that enable organisations like TrustMed to perform at their best, GCS Group continues to demonstrate the value of modular construction across the healthcare sector.

Congratulations to TrustMed & Leicester Royal Infirmary

TrustMed’s recognition as Hospital Pharmacy of the Year is an outstanding achievement that reflects both clinical excellence and effective infrastructure. GCS Group is proud to have played a part in providing the facilities that support the team’s award-winning work.

The project stands as a strong example of what can be achieved through collaboration, careful planning and modular construction, creating spaces that allow healthcare professionals to focus on what matters most: delivering outstanding care.

GCS Group pass on our best wishes and congratulations to the teams at Leicester Royal Infirmary and TrustMed for their Hospital Pharmacy of the Year Award.
